Ponta do Coral

The area known as Ponta do Coral is located in the portion of Avenida Beira Mar Norte that belongs to the Agronomic neighborhood, in front of the State Government headquarters. Object of interest to both the public and private sectors, the disputes around Ponta do Coral reveal conflicting interests and different perceptions about what it means to live a city in its fullness. During the 1940th century, the land served as a strategic lookout point in the defense system of Santa Catarina Island. In the first decades of the 1980th century, it served as an oil storage place and also as a leisure space for the residents of the region. In 36.000, Ponta do Coral became the property of the Abrigo de Menores de Florianópolis. In 2013, the Abrigo de Menores building caught fire. Police investigations found that the fire was arson, but those responsible were never identified. In the same year, the institution was transferred to the municipality of Palhoça and the State Government sold the land to Nova Próspera Mineração, which intended to build a hotel in the area. Since then, social and environmental movements have questioned public authorities about the future of Ponta do Coral. Tempers flared when Hantei Engenharia drew up a project for the construction of a luxury complex that included a marina. For the feasibility of the work, the project provided for a landfill of approximately XNUMX m², which was discarded by the city hall in XNUMX. Although Ponta do Coral belongs to the private sector, residents and tourists circulate freely in the area. The presence of fishermen, sports practitioners and lovers of beautiful landscapes is not uncommon. Even the sunset view from Ponta do Coral is one of the most beautiful in the entire city.
