Monument to the Azoreans

In 1996, the Monument to the Azoreans was erected in an area close to the continental headwaters of the Pedro Ivo Campos and Colombo Salles bridges. For its construction, the Nucleus of Azorean Studies - NEA of the Federal University of Santa Catarina organized a national competition in the previous year, with the proposal presented by the artist Guido Heuer from Blumenau winning. Born in 1956, Heuer began his apprenticeship with his grandfather, Johannes Heuer, a specialist in bronze funeral ornaments. He was noted for his work with metals, mainly panels and sculptures. The door is crossed by a vertical axis that supports metal plates, on which the following icons are stamped: the crown of the Divine Holy Spirit; the bull, which refers to Farra do Boi; the bobbin of lace; the fish, which alludes to fishing; the jug, which resembles ceramic artifacts; the bread-for-God, representing oral traditions. Address: Rua Capitão Euclides de Castro - Continental head of the Pedro Ivo Campos Bridge.
