Despite the calm sea, with warm and inviting waters for bathing, in several points of the shore the use is inadvisable due to the pollution points. To see this information, just access the bathing report.

History

The name of Coqueiros is a direct reference to the homonymous tree, since the coconut trees that existed there used to identify the area in other times. A very curious fact in this regard is that, as they live in a neighborhood whose name is in the plural, several residents of Coqueiros have the habit of saying that they live “in Coqueiros”. For a long time, the locality belonged to the municipality of São José.

One of the first records about Coqueiros dates from the end of the XNUMXth century, when the governor of the Captaincy of Santa Catarina released a report that presented the best places for the production of some foodstuffs. However, the effective occupation of the region only took place in the XNUMXth century, with the construction of the first cross and, later, the first chapel.

Still in the XNUMXth century, Coqueiros began to receive the visit of boats powered by steam, which carried out transport between the Island and the Continent. Such modernity was in sharp contrast to the way of life of the inhabitants of the small village, who lived basically from agriculture and fishing, believed in the fantastic stories told by their ancestors and had in the events promoted by the church an important means of sociability.

Throughout the 1907th century, the sea gained even more importance in Coqueiros. In 1920, the Escola de Aprendizes Marinheiros moved to the region, occupying the old building that, in the past, had been the Hospedaria dos Imigrantes and, more recently, housed the Florianópolis Department of Tourism. In the XNUMXs, with the construction of the Hercílio Luz bridge, both the beach of Coqueiros and other resorts on the continent were favored by wealthy families in Florianópolis as areas favorable to leisure. This made the region gain a new pier in 1928.

During the 1930s, several structures and establishments linked to this universe emerged in Coqueiros, such as warehouses, trampolines, clubs and restaurants. During this period, many families built their summer homes there as well. On the other hand, the construction of the Hercílio Luz Bridge meant that the boat crossings between the Island and the Continent practically disappeared.

On a trip to Rio de Janeiro, federal intervenor Nereu Ramos had contact with a survey that pointed out Florianópolis as one of the three smallest Brazilian capitals. As soon as he returned to the city, his first move was to form a commission for the territorial review of Santa Catarina. The result of this commission was the decree nº 951 of 1944, which annexed the neighborhoods of Narrow, capoeiras, itaguaçu, Abraão and Coqueiros to the capital.

The mainland resorts remained the favorites of Florianópolis residents until the 1960s. However, some factors contributed to the compromise of this position: the pollution that reached the beaches near the center of the city, the inauguration of Ponte Colombo Salles and the construction of roads that facilitated the access to the interior of the Island of Santa Catarina.

From the 1970s onwards, what could be seen was a real phenomenon of real estate speculation, both in Coqueiros and in neighboring neighborhoods. Consequently, there was also an accelerated process of urbanization, where the humble fishermen's ranches and the old summer houses started to coexist with residential subdivisions of high standard.
