School of Apprentice-Sailors of Santa Catarina

The Escola de Aprendizes-Marinheiros de Santa Catarina, located in the Estreito neighborhood, aims to train future (military) sailors for their professional duties. This type of training began in 1836, during the Regency Period, when the Fixed Companies of Sailors in Rio de Janeiro were created. In them, young people aged between 12 and 16 received their first instructions in naval art. Later, they were transformed into Schools for Apprentice-Sailors. The Escola de Aprendizes-Marinheiros of Santa Catarina was created on October 24, 1857, together with that of Pernambuco. Initially, the Escola de Aprendizes-Marinheiros de Santa Catarina was installed next to the Captaincy of the Ports which, at the time, was located in the old Rita Maria neighborhood and later to the Fort of Sant'Anna of the Strait. There was also a time when the school operated on board the transport ship Tapajós, anchored on the shore of sambaqui. From there it was transferred to a building in the Prainha region (downtown) and then to the São Francisco ferry. It also worked in one of the wings of the Campo do Manejo Quartel, in a building in Praia de Fora and in the old historic building at the head of the Colombo Sales Bridge in Coqueiros, the Hostel for Immigrants. There, it remained until 1943, when construction began on the current facilities in the Estreito neighborhood, which were only inaugurated on October 24, 1950.
