Church of Our Lady of Conception

Located next to Morro da Lagoa, in one of the most strategic places in Lagoa da Conceição, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição was completed in 1780, 29 years after Governor Manuel Escudeiro Ferreira de Souza sent the temple plan to Portugal. The project was approved by the Portuguese Court to be built in one of the allotments of the founder of Nossa Senhora do Desterro (formerly Florianópolis), Francisco Dias Velho. This sesmaria area became the well-known Parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição.

The Church has undergone many modifications and repairs over time. In 1847, with the visit of Emperor D. Pedro II, the parish of Lagoa and its Church received the sum of 800 thousand réis to pay the custody of silver previously commissioned. When the Emperor returned from Rio Grande, he already found custody purchased and was "completely satisfied with the work and the design", according to the letter of the then vicar to the President of the Province. A new visit by the Emperor took place in 1861, this time presenting the temple with two bells, which are still there today.

Despite all the transformations undergone inside, the successive repaintings, the Church of Lagoa is still a good example of the architecture brought by the Portuguese to Santa Catarina lands.

So much so that in 1974, the then mayor of Florianópolis, Esperidião Amin, signed a decree toppling five churches that represented Portuguese architecture on the island: the Church of São Francisco de Assis, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and São Benedito, both in the center of city, the Church of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades, in Santo Antônio de Lisboa, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa do Ribeirão da Ilha and the "Igrejinha da Lagoa", as the Church of Nossa da Conceição is known. The act of listing does not give any guarantee of perpetuation, but recognizes the artistic, cultural and historical value of the monument.

On December 8, 1999, Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church was elevated to the category of Sanctuary.

Overview

Its walls feature a mixture of construction techniques: adobe and stone masonry.

Possibly, calcium oleate was also used in the mortar of the walls, a common fact in colonial buildings, especially in regions where whale oil was easily obtained, such as Santa Catarina. The traditional layout, nave and chancel, sacristy at the back, common to almost all the churches on the Island, is maintained; door and glass oculus inserted in the triangular pediment, framed by curved ornamentation, topped off by an iron cross, and framed by stonework corners topped by spires.

The stonework doorway with curved lintel and lintel, made of stonework, also has a padded door. On the left, the bell tower is also framed by stone corners topped by spires. On top of the vaulted bell tower, topping it off, a pinnacle, gabled roof cover, topped off by an eaves on a cymbal. In front of the church, in the churchyard, a large crucifix.

In the late 80s, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in a partnership between the municipality and the State, underwent a process of architectural recovery. Among the "adjustments" were included the roof, lining, floor, frames, walls, electrical part, among others. The Church, as well as its surroundings, are protected by Municipal Law No. ie "area of historical interest".
