Church of Our Lady of Lapa

Built in 1763 and sacred in 1806, the Nossa Senhora da Lapa Church, located in the Ribeirão da Ilha District, underwent many interventions until it became really suitable for celebrations. In 1840, for example, financial resources were requested from the then president of the Province "to attend to urgent repairs to the roof and sacristy of the Church, almost in ruins".

However, during the visit of D. Pedro II, in 1845, the Emperor of Brazil donated the amount of 400 thousand réis to the Church, which contributed to the realization of new works and repairs to the Parish. Two years later, the same money was still used for paintings and renovations.

Until the present century, new and disastrous interventions were made, although, fortunately, the Church still preserves some of its original characteristics.

Following a colonial architectural design, the main façade of Nossa Senhora da Lapa Church features a triangular pediment. Behind, there are two towers, one blind and the other a bell. It has two bells, balustrades around the edges and spiers in the center of the roof, in a pyramidal shape.

On the portal, three windows, all with arched lintels and solid wood frames, in addition to stucco decoration, in which the lintel affects a triangular shape. All doors are padded and the windows have a small-frame glass sash on the outside.

On the upper vertex of the pediment, surmounted by an iron cross, decoration in volutes.

At the back, symmetrically, to the right and left of the main body, the two sacristies, whose entrance doors are surmounted by arched lintels. These constructions are finished off with a platband. The side facades have three tall, rectangular windows, with glass panes and a door, with wooden frames, topped by lintels and lintels in a lowered arch. of thickness.

The three doors of the nave (the main and two lateral ones) have pipe hinges, possibly from the time of construction. The main door of the temple is padded and has an interesting original knocker.

On the nave ceiling, a painting representing, in the center, the Holy Family, the visit of the Magi and the crucified Christ. On the wall over the cross arch, the representation of Christ and Saint John the Baptist. On the choir wall, a simple painting represents Santa Cecília.

The chancel, with a beautiful golden white altar, Solomonic columns, scrolls and baroque-inspired shells, contains beautiful examples of religious art from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. Still in the chancel, two windows on each side, opening on one side to the sacristy and on the other to the vicar's residence. On the painted ceiling, a medallion with angels. The altarpieces on the cross are in the same style as the main altar, with delicate wooden baldachins in their highest part.

The Church and its surroundings are included in a type UM Cultural Preservation Area, that is, an area of ​​historical interest, and are also protected by Municipal Law nº 2193, of 1985.
