The Best Waterfall on the Island...

The Poção do Córrego Grande, as the best waterfall on the island is called, is located eight kilometers from the central region of the city, in a residential district booming real estate. The area suitable for swimming and diving is approximately 10m x 4m and can accommodate no more than ten people at a time. But, in the summer, during the weekends, the place is overpopulated by residents of the nearby neighborhoods and also of the Center. In this season the water quality drops and the garbage is thrown in the surroundings. The best time to visit Poção do Córrego Grande is in low season, when the place is clean and the water is renewed.

The waterfall has approximately five meters of drop and got its name due to the depth of the place, which in some places exceeds three meters. It is surrounded by walls up to ten meters high - from which the bravest jump headfirst - and a dense Atlantic Forest.

The stream that forms the waterfall is responsible for the water supply of the local neighborhood. But it has already served as a laundry for descendants of Azoreans who settled there in the first half of this century.

...and the Easiest Trail

One of the main features of the Poção trail is its easy access. From the final stop of the Córrego Grande bus, going up along Rua Sebastião Laurentino da Silva, a small path appears on the right, which leads to the waterfall. The walk follows an open trail, surrounded by trees and bordering the entire stream, always accompanied by an aqueduct of the Companhia de Águas e Saneamento (Casan). A little further up the Poção is the point where Casan collects water, but the passage is not allowed.

Attention! From the Potion onwards there is no more trail. The walk continues inside the stream and the presence of spiders becomes common, greatly increasing the degree of difficulty.

Time: About 7,5 hrs in total, 4,5 hrs to go up and 3 to come down 20min.
