Florianopolis Air Base

In 1922, in compliance with decree No. 15.672, Frigate Captain Luiz Pereira Pinto Galvão acquired part of the land that belonged to the old Ressacada farm and, later, on May 10, 1923, installed the Naval Aviation Center in that region, part of a set of Naval Bases that would serve the Air Defense System of the Coast of Brazil. The administration building, two accommodations, the magazine, an infirmary, a hangar for hydroplanes, workshops, a weather station and other infrastructure works were built on the site. Aviation, until then, was done only by seaplanes.

Soon after the works were concluded, it was already necessary to provide the undertow field with a better infrastructure to serve ground aviation. At the time, it was the only airfield in existence and was being used by foreign planes.

The beginning of the operation as a commercial airport takes place on June 21, 1927, when an airplane of the Latécoerè Company, piloted by the Frenchman Paul Vachet, landed in the Ressacada field. On January 20, 1941, with the creation of the Ministry of Aeronautics, the Naval Aviation Center changed its name to Florianópolis Air Base. In the period from 1952 to 1954, the passenger terminal was built, managed by the Department of Civil Aviation (DAC) and, until 1955, the Base/Airport complex had a control tower, built in wood, a concrete runway of 1.500 mx 45 m and a grassy yard for aircraft parking. Since then, numerous works have been carried out to expand and improve the airport's infrastructure to provide comfort and safety to its users. These works at the airport and the establishment in the region of the military who served at the Florianópolis Air Base provided the town with a slow but continuous development process.
