Monument to Rita Maria

Sculpture built from scrap iron, created by Paulo de Siqueira (1949-1996). It represents Rita Maria, an Afro-descendant daughter of slaves who lived on the outskirts of Forte de Santana. She gained fame between the end of the XNUMXth century and the beginning of the XNUMXth century, due to her knowledge of medicinal herbs and the realization of blessings.

The region where he lived became a neighborhood, which earned his name. However, with the urban growth of Florianópolis, these neighborhoods were gradually being gradually absorbed by the central region, ceasing to exist.

In the sculpture, Rita Maria appears performing a blessing. The position of the hands was designed for this representation: one of them captures the healing powers and the other is directed towards the blessed.
