Ribeirão da Ilha Ecomuseum

The Ecomuseum is a rural property, with a very simple and rudimentary style, without electricity, without sanitary installations, without running water, fitting in the perspective of keeping the indicatives of a unique culture of the Island of Santa Catarina, with an ecological ecosystem and cultural.

In this property, emphasis is given to the Azorean man, who devoted much of his life to the cultivation of crops such as sugar cane, corn, cassava and wheat. And, seeking to provide better technology for the production of manioc flour, he created a form of mechanization to improve the process. He then sought a new form, inventing the manioc flour mill, a rustic instrument that uses the driving force of cattle to assist in the production of flour. Machinery that is conserved until today in the place.

The foundation

The Ecomuseum of Ribeirao da Ilha was created on July 01, 1971, on the initiative of Professor Nereu do Vale Pereira with the collaboration of the Department of Sociology of ufsc and the local community. In 1974, the museum underwent renovations, through an agreement signed with the Municipality of Florianópolis, and a Cassava Flour Mill was installed, a landmark of Azorean culture.

From then on, the Museum began to receive more attention from the people of the state, mainly for the purpose of expressing the entire process of rural activity and the life of the Azorean people in Santa Catarina. As a result, the site began to receive significant visitors, receiving distinguished guests such as professors from the University of the Azores, in addition to countless other professors from foreign universities, affirming the cultural importance of the Museum.

The museum was established, and has been acting, as a form of support for the community to preserve its historical cultural values and, through this procedure, find support to develop socially. Currently, the Ecomuseum is concerned with giving priority to the care of schools and their teachers, which has occurred quite frequently, since in the elementary school curricula the State establishes the Azorean colonization as an indispensable content. The initiative has achieved good results. Since its inception in 1971, the site has been visited by more than fifty thousand people.

Collection - Main Pieces

The Ecomuseum has a very diverse collection. Firstly, because of the ecosystem present around the property, which contains an afforestation full of cataloged native plants, some very rare and almost extinct. In addition, the museum has a collection of more than a thousand pieces, including implements and objects of various sizes, shapes, purposes and utilities. However, they all concern the Azorean people of the south of the island of Santa Catarina.

Among the most important thematic pieces, we highlight: a millstone, made with basalt stone and volcanic lava from the island of Pico Azores, a travel trunk and an oratory, all brought by the first resident of the land, José Lino Vieira, originally from from Pico Island. The collection also contains an artisanal nativity scene from 1813, assembled mainly with mummified natural products, an artisanal loom, clay and ceramic utensils, gramophones, record player and other antiquities from the Azorean culture. It is, in general, a collection of the most significant and identifier of a culture and people little known by Brazilians from other regions of the country.
