Garbage Museum

O Garbage Museum was born from the dream of a group of Comcap employees, who intended to rescue materials thrown in the trash to build a memory space about society's habits and consumption. Installed on September 25, 2003, the museum has become a reference among environmental education activities in the State of Santa Catarina, due to the way it reinforces content on sustainable consumption, based on the concepts of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Collection

The first separate pieces were placed in the old sorting shed for the selective collection of Comcap. Today, the Museu do Lixo brings together outstanding collections, with thousands of items in the process of being catalogued. The collection is assembled and decorated in different environments, all produced based on the reuse of materials from the garbage collection. Even the paints used in the paintings and the floor mandala were made with reused materials. The main reused materials are clothes irons, soda and beer cans, cameras and sewing machines, telephones and computers. The Museum receives around six thousand visitors a year, and is part of the guided tour of the Solid Waste Transfer Center (CTRes) of Comcap, a mixed-capital company controlled by the Municipality of Florianópolis.
