Nativity Museum

Florianópolis is one of the few cities in the world to have a permanent collection of nativity scenes. Created in 2002 and maintained by the Florianópolis City Hall, the Nativity Scene Museum is located inside the Bosque Vereador Pedro Medeiros, in the Narrow, mainland region of the city. The site has a green area of more than 10 thousand square meters of remaining forest, where it is possible to take walks and picnics. The space is based in an 18th century mansion, listed by the Historical Heritage, and houses 105 sets of handcrafted pieces. The Museum houses Nativity scenes of various sizes, colors and materials, which stage the birth of the baby Jesus in shop windows, squares and home decorations. They are made of metal, semi-precious stones, shells, ceramics, marble, porcelain, straw, bread dough. Made with various techniques and materials, such as ceramics, bamboo, glass, seaweed and sand, the cribs originate from various parts of Brazil and the world. There are pieces from Germany, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Israel and China, in addition to several pieces from Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Pernambuco and some of unknown origin. Several of them stand out for their size, such as the tiny crib mounted on a matchbox. Others, made from materials found in nature, appear inside shells, porongos and bamboo hollows.
