Bento Silvério Cultural Center (Casarão da Lagoa)

An old radio-telegraph station and an engine room, the only Florianopolitan example of typical architecture from the post-industrial revolution period, opened in 1912, but listed by the Historic and Architectural Heritage of Florianópolis in 1985. This is the current headquarters of the Franklin Cascaes Foundation which offers courses and workshops in order to rescue cultural manifestations and local history.

The preservation of folklore, handicrafts, memory, history and popular culture is present in the activities of the local community, concentrating some activities in the Center. There, groups of Terno de Reis, Mouse, Cantoria do Divino, Ribbon e Papaya Ox, among other cultural manifestations. Currently, courses and workshops on bobbin lace and Tramóia, Artes, Artesanal Fishing, in addition to housing rooms for Handicrafts for Women Volunteers, Exhibitions and a library.

But who was Bento Silvério?

Bento Silvério was born on March 5, 1951, in the District of Lagoa da Conceição. He stood out in short story competitions at Ufsc, which he won. One of his works is "Entropia e Evasão: Contos", a book of short stories, published by Ufsc in 1980. The cultural name - Bento Silvério - honors one of the most respected political reporters in Santa Catarina, who died in 1987.
