Monument to the Lacemakers

In front of the old customs house is the Monument to the Rendeiras, which was part of a redevelopment project carried out by the Florianópolis City Hall in Largo da Alfândega. It refers to the art of bobbin lace, one of the cultural manifestations usually associated with traditions inherited from the Azorean settlers who emigrated to Santa Catarina in the XNUMXth century.

Of delicate and meticulous elaboration, bobbin lace is usually made by women (hence the reference to “lace lace”). The base on which the lacemaker works is a pillow, where the card with the design to be made is usually placed; with the help of pins, the lacemaker braids the thread strands attached to small wooden rods (the bobbins). In the monument, the bobbins are highlighted.

Address: Avenida Paulo Fontes, s/n. in front of the old customs, Center.
