Hercílio Luz Bridge

The main postcard of Florianópolis, the Hercílio Luz Bridge was built between 1922 and 1926. Until its opening in 1926, the approximately 40 thousand inhabitants of Florianópolis depended on ferries to cross between the insular portion and the mainland portion.

Initially, the bridge would be called "Independencia", in allusion to the end of the difficulty to cross the channel, but it was changed after the death of the governor who idealized the construction. Hercílio Luz did not see the inauguration of the bridge, but participated in a symbolic act of inauguration of a wooden suspension bridge specially erected in Praça XV de Novembro, 12 days before his death.

Designed by engineers from the United States and built with materials imported from there, the Hercílio Luz Bridge is located at the closest point between the island and the mainland. It was closed in 1982 as a security measure. Since then, it only serves as a symbol of the city, having relevant meaning for the population.

It has been closed since 1991 and is currently undergoing restoration. Learn more about Hercílio Luz Bridge.
