Santa Catarina Art Museum | male

The Museu de Arte de Santa Catarina (Masc) was created on March 18, 1949 and since then brings together and makes available to the public a diverse and expressive collection, which contains approximately 1.750 works by national and international artists, with emphasis also on artists from Santa Catarina. The Museum is linked to the Fundação Catarinense de Cultura (FCC) and its mission is to expand and socialize art, culture and aesthetic pleasure for the entire community and visitors, either through exhibitions of the collection or through temporary exhibitions.

The creation of the Museu de Arte de Santa Catarina began with the “Contemporary Art Exhibition”, brought to Florianópolis in 1948 by the carioca writer Marques Rebelo. The exhibition, which at the time had great repercussions in the city, was presented at the former Grupo Escolar Modelo Dias Velho, and left, on the occasion, important donations from the writer himself and participating artists.

The writer's idea was that the exhibition would be the initial step towards the construction of the Museum and together with the support of a group of intellectuals from Florianópolis, known as Grupo Sul, this intention worked. Thus, in March 1949, on account of a State Decree, the Museum of Modern Art of Florianópolis (MAMF) was created, later named the Museum of Art of Santa Catarina (Masc).
