Museum of the Man of Sambaqui

Organized from 1964 onwards, by Father João Alfredo Rohr, the Museum of the Sambaqui Man has one of the largest archaeological collections in Brazil, bringing together approximately five thousand objects. Specializing in prehistoric archaeology, the Museum contains pieces that are more than eight thousand years old. Among them, skeletons taken from archaeological sites discovered by the priest on Santa Catarina Island and in the interior of Santa Catarina stand out. In addition, funerary urns, indigenous burials, indigenous lithic artifacts and ceramic fragments were also discovered.

To find these pieces, several excavations were necessary, mainly in regions in the south of the island, such as the Air Base, Frame, south swamp and Tapera Beach. Excavations were also carried out in Praia das Laranjeiras (Municipality of Camboriú) and in the Municipality of Itapiranga. Currently, there are almost 200 skeletons in excellent condition, with an estimated age between 1.055 and 1.552 years.

The Museum also has a zoology wing, where animals of various species are preserved through taxidermy. The collection also houses sacred art, numismatics (coins and cells), fossils up to 225 million years old, indigenous utensils and other materials. Therefore, the Museum of Man of Shellmound holds one of the largest archaeological collections in Brazil.
