Hassis Museum

The Museum is a tribute to the artist Hiedy de Assis Corrêa from Santa Catarina. It was created in 2001, and aims to preserve and disseminate the artist's memory and material. The Foundation's headquarters are in the former house of Hassis, where the artist lived between 1969 and 2001. In addition to the works, the museum has an archive, auditorium, workshops and cultural dissemination activities such as seminars and exhibitions.

Collection of the Hassis Museum

The Museum houses a large collection of works in drawing, painting, 8mm cinema, Super 8, photography, slides and audiovisuals. All this content was collected during the artist's more than 60 years of activity, between 1944 and 2001. And, because of this artistic diversity, the museum was divided into six sections, each containing unique works produced with different materials.

Pictorial collection: comprising approximately six hundred works, this collection presents Hassis' most recognized face, that of a painter. The works use acrylic paint on canvas, eucatex, cardboard or wood and were preserved by Hassis in his own collection. The museum's pictorial collection ranges from the first painting by Hassis, in 1957, to his last painting, in 2001, which was not completed due to his death.

Sculptural collection: in the 70's, Hassis innovates and begins to produce sculptures, using leftover materials. In his works, the artist creates shapes from the collection of construction waste. These works can still be seen in the photographic archive, which contains images from the time in which they were created. Another work that stands out is a large seagull, designed by Hassis in iron.

Collection of works on paper: Hassis studied drawing and painting for more than half a century. It is perhaps the most unknown and richest portion of his work. Deposited in 25 cardboard boxes of photographic film, the 1.500 works show a whole path taken by Hassis in the visual arts. In the first folder, you can see his first drawing, made when he was 11 years old, in 1937. The collection also has posters created by the artist since the 60s, when he started working as a draftsman for the Federal University of Santa Catarina.

Documentary collection: Since the 40s, Hassis has gathered more than seven thousand documents and newspaper clippings that reported on his work and that of the other artists he had contact with. In the 60s, the artist began to gather catalogs and invitations to exhibitions by artists from Santa Catarina, which reveal the environments and ways in which art is disseminated in the state. This collection is duly restored and conditioned.

Photographic Collection: from a young age, Hassis did not leave the house without his camera in tow. And the result worked. The artist managed to gather a large photographic collection, which houses more than eight thousand photographs and about a thousand devices. The photos depict Florianópolis from the 50's and 60's, going through the exhibitions of artists, even family photos.

Audiovisual collection: Hassis was one of the pioneers of 8mm and Super 8 cinema in Florianópolis. Not holding back from mere family records, the artist started a visual experiment. Of these works, the following stand out: Ano 66 (8mm, 1966, 26´), Batucada (Super 8, 1970, 4´30´´), Yesterday (Super 8, 1972, 15´), Fpolis Era (Super 8, 1978 , 8´40´´), Mãos (Super 8, 1979, 4´), Itaguaçu (Super 8, 1979, 3´50´´) and Dança Boi (Super 8, 1979, 6´30´´). With the introduction of VHS cameras, Hassis began filming in video format, recording over 500 tapes.

Little story about the artist

Born in Curitiba, in 1926, Hiedy Assis Correa moved to Florianópolis in 1928. Since childhood, Hassis showed an interest in art and was always creative, especially when reading comic books, observing movements, shapes and colors.

He started his career as a draftsman in a typography company and in the woodworking company Santo Amaro. And, in 1948, the artist illustrated the short stories “Noturno” and “Flores”, in addition to the cover of the book “Terra Fraca”, becoming an illustrator for Revista Sul and a contributor to the artistic and literary movement known as “Grupo Sul”, in 40s to 50s. At the same time, he became a founding member of the Grupo de Artistas Plásticos de Florianópolis – GAPF, and participated in the first Salon of the same group, obtaining 1st place with the canvas “Vento Sul com Chuva”.

In 1962, Hassis presents one of his main works, in which the 14 steps of his Via Crusis were painted on canvas, expressing all the serenity of Christ in the suffering of Calvary.

In 1972, the exhibition “O Circo” was presented, showing the universe of the show, populated by dreams and fantasies. These same drawings were gathered and transformed into an album, containing 19 boards and entitled “Respectable Public”, being published in 1982.

Hassis and the "Contestado – Contested Land" panel

Hassis was always interested in the Contestado War, mainly through his grandfather, who had a direct participation in the conflict. And, based on the unfolding of this conflict, in 1984 the artist began painting the panel “Contestado – Terra Contestada”, 36 meters long, divided into its seven modules. The drawings depicted on the panel give a chronological account of the Contestado War. After staying for years at the Rita Maria Bus Terminal, in Florianópolis, he was transferred to the Contestado Museum, in Caçador – SC.

All the plastic evolution of Hassis shows his childhood records, everyday situations, social issues and especially about island folklore, places and characters of Santa Catarina land. It was in Santa Catarina that the artist lived since he was two years old, where he became a renowned and important artist in the context of Santa Catarina art. The artist has more than 66 individual exhibitions, which are part of the collections of the following art museums: Masc de Florianópolis/SC, MAC de Curitiba/PR, as well as private collections in Brazil and abroad.
