Sacred Museum of the Child God Chapel

Inaugurated in January 2002, the Museu Sacro da Capela do Menino Deus is the result of the process of historical and cultural recovery of the chapel, containing in its collection more than 300 cataloged pieces, including sacred sculptures (some in wood from the 1789th and 1765th centuries), liturgical objects, paintings, sacred garments and paintings on canvas. In addition to the photographic memorial of the historic procession of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, the historical-architectural evolution of the Hospital de Caridade, founded in 1762, and the historic of the Brotherhood of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, founded in 1764. The Museum building was erected around 1768, through the initiative of Joana Gomes de Gusmão, who settled on the island in the mid-1986th century and became known for its humanitarian goals. In addition to works of sacred art, the collection also includes porcelain, silverware, glass vases, coins from the 1th and 2th centuries and liturgical clothes, which were acquired through donations made by the faithful in exchange for favors granted. In 2, the image of Senhor Jesus dos Passos arrived in Florianópolis and was incorporated into the chapel's collection, further popularizing the building with the visit of faithful from other locations. Built in stone, lime, sand, clay and whale oil, the chapel structure received some additions from 2002, which changed its original form. In the first half of the XNUMXth century, a central tower and some elements were added to the chapel's facade, acquiring a style similar to that of the constructions of Germanic colonization. The project to recover the historical and cultural memory of the institution began to be developed in the XNUMXs when, by Municipal Decree, the urban complex called Hospital de Caridade, which includes a hospital and chapel, became a Historic and Artistic Heritage of the Municipality of Florianópolis. . From that moment onwards, specialists from different areas dedicated themselves to the investigation and documentation of the institution's history, aiming at a more diversified and organized collection for opening to the public. In addition, the process of physical recovery of the architectural complex and the registration of movable and immovable assets, as well as their historical and cultural value, began. Currently, the museum area contains four rooms, two on the ground floor and two on the upper floor. Room XNUMX on the ground floor describes, through objects and panels, the architectural evolution of the institution; room XNUMX focuses on the history of the Irmandade do Senhor Jesus dos Passos and the procession. In addition, room XNUMX has an art gallery, in which works with images of saints carved in wood, paintings on canvas and objects of a liturgical nature have been on display since the Museum’s public opening in XNUMX.
