The population of Florianópolis, according to the estimate of the 2010 Census (IBGE), is composed of 421.240 inhabitants, with a population density of 929 inhabitants per km². This makes the capital the second largest city in terms of population in the state, second only to Joinville. Anyone born in Florianopolis is officially called a Florianopolitan. The term "manezinho", so used these days, was formerly used in a pejorative way for the rural man from the interior of the island, which makes some of the older people not like to be called "manezinhos".
