Museum of Archeology and Ethnology

Initially inaugurated as an Anthropology institute, the MArque, Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of ufsc, Professor Oswaldo Rodrigues Cabral, was opened to the public in 1968 with the purpose of researching, producing and disseminating knowledge about pre-colonial, colonial and indigenous populations and carrying out museological actions, aiming at a broad understanding of the reality of Santa Catarina, critically reflecting on the diversity and sociocultural identity of the State.

In addition to the important collection of Pre-colonial and Historical Archeology and Indigenous Ethnology, the Museum is the guardian of the Profª Elizabeth Pavan Cascaes collection, which contains more than 2.700 pieces and preserves the significant collection of Franklin Cascaes, an artist who became a reference in the understanding of human occupation in Florianópolis. This collection houses numerous drawings, manuscripts and sculptures that portray the daily life, religiosity, legends, folk myths and traditions of the first settlers of Santa Catarina Island.

The Museum also contains lithic collections, baskets, ceramics, glass, paper, bone, wood, plant fibers, iron, photographic materials, fabric and feathers. Diversity of materials that, for the most part, were the result of research carried out by the Museum's Technical-Scientific Body.
