House of Nereu Ramos

Those who stroll through the center, between commercial buildings and public offices, immediately notice an imposing yellow house, in the midst of gardens, on top of a high ground, located on the corner of Visconde de Ouro Preto and Artista Bittencourt streets. The property, currently occupied by the Fundação Cultural BADESC, was in the past the home of Nereu Ramos, an influential politician from Santa Catarina (1888-1958). The building, with approximately 410 m² of built area, has a rectangular plan, on two floors and a hipped roof, with French tiles. Of the main body, which preserves the aesthetic principles of the eclectic and art deco styles, two volumes stand out: a portico on the main façade and the other on the façade facing Rua Artista Bitencourt. The wooden floor and ceiling, the wide and high windows scattered throughout the house, the staircase with only some of its parts replaced, the external and internal columns and the mosaic tile floor on the ground floor balcony are preserved. Nereu Ramos' house is surrounded by a stone retaining wall, over which is an ornate iron railing. In an eclectic style, the building has been protected by municipal heritage since 1983. Its construction dates from the end of the 1920s, the result of a tribute by the former governor to his daughter Olga. On the main access gate there are the initials "OR", by Olga Ramos. Nereu Ramos lived there with his wife Beatriz and their children Olga, Nereu Ramos Filho, Murilo and Rubens between 1930 and 1945. Recently, the old Casa de Nereu Ramos underwent a process of revitalization to house the BADESC Foundation, but preserved the elements of the original finish. Address: BADESC Cultural Foundation - Rua Visconde de Ouro Preto, 216 - Centro
