Son of a sailor, born on January 6, 1863 in the parish of São Francisco de Paula de Canasvieiras, north of Santa Catarina Island, Virgílio Várzea lived in Desterro until the age of thirteen, when he was sent to the Naval School in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1881 he returned to Desterro and, from then on, held several public positions, having been Public Prosecutor in São José and Secretary of the Captaincy of Ports and Professor in Florianópolis.

Alongside Cruz e Sousa, he edited the book Tropos e Fantasias and the newspapers “Colombo” and “Tribuna Popular”, the latter focused on the abolitionist campaign. In the field of political activism, they led, from 1883 to 1887, the "Guerrilha Literária Catarinense", a movement against romantic conservatism, which tried to implement the "New Idea", that is, the aesthetic renewal of Realism-Naturalism.

In 1892 he was elected Deputy, but at the end of his term he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he lived until his death on December 29, 1941.

Among the numerous literary contributions left by Virgílio Várzea, the work Santa Catarina: A Ilha stands out, which until today is considered a valuable source of historical information about the uses and customs of the islanders and the localities on the Island of Santa Catarina. .
