A sambaqui beach It is a traditional fishing village that shelters, in addition to natives, temporary visitors, tourists and vacationers looking for a calm and peaceful place to settle down.
With Azorean roots, the local community fights for the preservation of its customs and traditions, promoting religious festivals and encouraging folk dance groups, assembled and danced by the community members themselves.
The look is one of the biggest attributes of Sambaqui. In addition to the typical XNUMXth century landscape, it has a panoramic view of the North Bay and the mainland. It is because of this view that, in recent years, several bars and restaurants have been installed that specialize in cuisine based on seafood, a traditional product of the region.

Natural Features of Shellmound
As much as Saint Anthony of Lisbon, is an internal beach of the North Bay. From the beach, you can see the North Seaside Avenue, the bridges that connect the island to the mainland and the mainland regions to the north of Florianópolis.
The sea is calm and the area is muddy, with algae and silt on the rocks. The stones are also characteristic of the region. Many of them mark the limits between Sambaqui and Santo Antônio de Lisboa, in addition to composing a beautiful landscape, where seagulls land waiting for the right moment to dive in search of fish.
The beach is just over a kilometer long. The width of the strip of sand ranges from zero to just over 10 meters.

History of Sambaqui
The history of Sambaqui is hidden in the very meaning of the word in Tupi-Guarani: sambá or tambá (shell, oyster) and qui or quire (to sleep, to do), meaning cemetery, both for human bodies and for unused material.
Extensive deposits of sand, shells, oyster shells, remains of artifacts and skeletons were lodged there, which proved the presence of primitive inhabitants in this place, the sambaquians, also called sambaquis peoples.
From the XNUMXth century onwards, it began to receive Azorean settlers, along with Santo Antônio de Lisboa, one of the oldest Portuguese colonies in Florianópolis.
Shellmound still preserves the characteristics of a small, peaceful and bucolic village, in the interest of the residents, who value this lifestyle.
