Map Location Praia da Tapera

Sought after by families looking for tranquility, Praia da Tapera is the attraction for residents of the neighborhood and nearby.

It has a small extension, approximately 520 meters, with a narrow, thick and yellowish strip of sand. The waters are calm and warm, very transparent on south wind days, despite the fact that the sea floor is muddy and full of small shells.

For those who wish to venture out, close to the coast there are two islands: Dona Francisca, also known as Ilha das Flechas, and Ilha das Laranjeiras.

When the tide is low, it is possible to walk along a narrow strip of the seabed to Ilha Dona Francisca. To get to Ilha das Laranjeiras, it is only possible with stand-up boards, kayaks, or by hiring a transport by boat, which can be requested for the fishermen on the beach.

History of Tapera

The first inhabitants of the Tapera region were the Carijós Indians. The origin of the name Tapera comes from a term used by former residents to refer to the houses in the region, which resembled indigenous dwellings or to designate that a place was abandoned. This suggests that the region may have been abandoned for some time.

With the foundation of the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Lapa do Ribeirão Grande, small groups settled in the region and transformed the locality into a fishing village. However, it was only after the creation of the Naval Aviation Center, in 1923, that Tapera really started to develop.

Later, with the elevation of the old airfield to the category of airport and the growth of the Florianópolis Air Base, families of military and civilians began to settle in the region, giving greater proportion to the neighborhood.
