It has a wide strip of sand, which varies between two and 45 meters, some of them occupied by parked cars and restaurants that serve tables on the sand. It's not a long beach, just over a thousand meters.

The sea is intermediate between the bay and the high seas. Because of this, the waters are clear and calm, with pleasant temperatures. The seabed gains depth very smoothly. It is possible to enter the sea up to about 220 meters from the beach with your feet reaching the bottom.

The sand is fine and light yellow. It is separated from the small beach of Pontal, to the south, by a set of stones; on low tide days it is possible to cross these rocks and reach Daniela beach by the sand strip.

Access to Praia do Forte is via a small, steep and narrow road from Jurerê Internacional.

History of Praia do Forte

The history of the beach village is intertwined with the history of the Fort Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa, as it was this construction that gave rise to housing on the site.

Fort of Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa

During the period of construction and use of the fortress, a community was organized and developed, dedicating itself to fishing, agriculture and work next to the fort. Military construction began in 1740 and took four years.

In 1777, the Spanish crown promoted a major attack on Florianópolis. Following orders from the Governor of the Captaincy, Captain Simão Rodrigues de Proença, who commanded the Regiment of Infantry Line of Santa Catarina Island, withdrew from the Fort on the third day of the siege, without any combat – only two shots were fired.

Victorious, the Spaniards maintained dominion over Santa Catarina Island until the following year, when the Treaty of Santo Ildefonso assured the territory back to the Portuguese. Captain Simão Rodrigues de Proença was condemned by the Portuguese crown. Guilty of having fled the battle with the troops, he spent the rest of his days in prison.

The fortress was abandoned at the end of the 1893th century, after some occupation during the Federalist Revolution (1938). Irregular occupations began to appear in its surroundings and, already in ruins, it was listed by the former National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service in 1987. Since XNUMX, it has been registered as an archaeological site protected by federal law and archaeological prospecting work began.

A few other houses and small traders have sprung up since then. As a result, a road was built. Even so, the Forte region preserves the serenity of nature and population discretion.
