History of Ponta das Canas

Ponta das Canas Beach underwent strong changes in the 1970s. Until then, it functioned as a peaceful and remote community of fishermen and farmers. In this decade, an intense real estate movement developed and made the beach the tourist hub it is today.

At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the beach was completely isolated from other communities, with the residents walking to Cachoeira do Bom Jesus along the sand to, from there, take buses to the other locations on the island. The goods arrived by boat.

Fishermen's Community in Ponta das Canas

In the 1950s, the first dirt road was built under the orders of Mayor Paulo Fontes. At this time, there was a grounding so that the road could pass. Both the fishermen's shore, where the boats were parked, and the small lagoon of Ponta das Canas had reduced areas for the completion of the road.

Until 1960, the main houses were built around the church. Gradually, more and more houses appeared. Inherited lands were sold to real estate companies that bet on houses for season rental, following the tourist growth of Canasveiras and Cachoeira do Bom Jesus.
