Map Location Praia de Canasvieiras

A Canasvieiras beach, or resort of Canasvieiras, becomes, during the summer, one of the busiest destinations on the island. It is located in the northern region, between Jurere Beach and Cachoeira do Bom Jesus Beach. The calm waters and the infrastructure of the region make Canasvieiras a place to go with family or friends.

It is the favorite beach in Florianópolis for tourists from the Southern Cone. During the high season, Canasvieiras becomes a true beach retreat for families and young people from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Because of this, many establishments offer bilingual services, and it is not difficult to even find Argentine newspapers. On the streets, signs written in Spanish and vendors risking the language are common.

Due to the large infrastructure, the Canasvieiras beach works like a small town. It has health services, police, supermarket and commerce.

On sunny days, leisure and services go to the beach, with street vendors and spaces reserved for sports. At night, there's no shortage of fun. The streets of the center are close, so it is worth taking a walk to see the street artists, stop at a bar or buy remembrances.

Natural Features of Canasvieiras

The Canasvieiras sea is open to the north, and is intermediate between the ocean and bay seas. The waters, calm, warm (ranging between 23 and 26º in summer) and with gentle waves, are ideal for a fun day out for families with children. The waves extend on the beach for more than 50 meters due to the gentle slope of the sea floor, giving Canasvieiras the classification of shallow beach.

The sea takes on a bright greenish hue when the sun hits (on blue sky days). The sand is fine and yellowish, good for walking barefoot.

History of Canasvieiras

It is not known where the name Canasvieiras comes from. In a map of the region dated 1786, the record found is Praia Cana Vieiras. The beach probably got its name from a variety of sugarcane that either existed on the site or was cultivated by the Azoreans who started the small Village of Sao Francisco de Paula das Cana Vieiras. The village foundation was recorded in 1754. There, agriculture and livestock were cultivated. Subsequently, fishing established itself as the main activity of the beach.

The fishermen's ranches disappeared as the resort grew and today it is no longer possible to find them. Due to the good quality of the water and for being safe (close to the fortresses of Santa Cruz do Anhatomirim quality Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa), became the first resort in the city of Florianópolis. The use of the village as a resort grew rapidly. To boost this growth, the city government, in 1956, designed specific areas on streets and lots to sell. Today, it is one of the main seaside resorts in the south of the country.
