Location Praia do Moçambique

A Mozambique beach It is the longest beach in Florianópolis and one of the largest in Santa Catarina. Its 13,5 km of white and soft sand guarantee unspoiled natural beauty.

It is part of the Parque Florestal do Rio Vermelho, a reserve of approximately 400 thousand square meters with predominant pine vegetation.

There is no construction on the site or on the way. The landscape becomes even more deserted with the dunes, which cut the line between the undergrowth and the ocean.

The good waves and the quiet attract surfers. Due to the lack of infrastructure, the beach has a low flow of people. It is a quieter place to meet and spend the day. Both in high and low season, surfers are the ones who most frequent it.

Natural Features of Praia do Moçambique

Like the neighbors, mole, Cruet e joaquina, Mozambique is an oceanic beach, with rough and wide waves, white sand and waters with strong salinity. The sea is open and toppling (the depth increases abruptly, after a few steps towards the sea). Contact with the Falklands Current makes the water very cold.

The name of the beach comes from its main inhabitant: the clam Mozambique. The extension reaches 8,5 km with a strip of sand from 8 to 50 m. In addition to the Mozambican mollusc, for those who enjoy amateur fishing, there are spotted crabs, various fish and excellent conditions for mullet or purse seine nets.

Because of the sandy and flat ecosystem that was threatened, Dr. Henrique Berenhausen used the area as an experiment in the cultivation of several exotic species, such as Pinus Elliottii and Eucalyptus, transforming the area with dunes into a dense forest reserve.

Mozambique begins at Ponta das Aranhas, in the north, and extends to the dividing line between Lagoa da Conceição and the neighborhood of São João Batista do Rio Vermelho, in the south.

History of Praia do Moçambique

Ancient maps called Long Beach and after Big beach. The Mozambique nomenclature appears around 1850 and extends as official until today.

According to the Municipal Tourism Department (Setur), the term Mozambique can have three origins. The first and most widespread hypothesis is that of the Mozambican mollusc, which is often found on this beach. The mollusk is a small edible shell, which has an elongated shape and is small about three centimeters.

The second refers to a type of indigenous person from the African region who inhabited the territories and gave rise to the Mozambique nation. And the third explanation for the name may be linked to the history of the discoverer of Mozambique, Pedro Álvares Cabral. Cabral went to Mozambique, soon after his stay in Brazil, in 1500. So the name of this beach in Santa Catarina would have reference to this historical fact.
