Natural Features of Praia da Armação Beach

Its long strip of sand, approximately 3200 meters (with a width variation between 2 and 50 meters), provides the beach with differences in natural characteristics. While in some places the waves are small and calm, in others, like the north, they are agitated and favorable to the surf. The absence of a fountain is a characteristic of the waters.

The sands are clear and fine that mix with the clear water, which can get quite cold in the autumn and winter months.

Praia da Armação is bordered to the south by Ponta das Companhas, through which the Sangradouro river passes. It is the brand that divides Praia da Armação from Matadeiro Beach. To the north, the limit is due to the Morro das Pedras.

History of Praia da Armação

Sangradouro River - Armação Beach

According to the work of researcher, archaeologist and Jesuit Fr. João Alfredo Rohr, the first inhabitants of Praia da Armação appeared between 810 and 630 BC The discovery was made in 1969, with the removal of 82 indigenous skeletons, tools and other remains buried in the ground. This community lived from fishing, fruit plants and water provided by the Sangradouro River, which leaves Lagoa do Peri. They produced their tools with rocks from Ilha das Campanhas (granite and diabases).

Historical records written about the region date back to the XNUMXth century, when the Portuguese crown leased land and installed whaling facilities. The name of the beach, “Armação”, comes from these constructions.

In 1772, the church is built in honor of Santa Ana. Around this church, the Armação community grew. It was in the church that harpooners and whalers' crews would confess and hear mass before setting out to sea. Then the priest would go down to the beach to bless the departing boats.

Fishermen and their families settled there for the opportunity for jobs with whaling. Praia da Armação was the second whaling center in Santa Catarina and the first on the island. The frame consisted of: tank house, oil mill, large house, warehouse, slave quarters, chapel, whalers' companies and flour mill.

During the XNUMXth and early XNUMXth centuries, this was the main economic activity in the region and brought many families in search of employment. The main purpose of fishing was the extraction of oil from whales, which was used for lighting public roads and lamps and as mortar in constructions.

A 30-ton whale can contain about 6 liters of oil. Whales' fins, which reached around 200 kilograms per animal, were sold in Europe. With them, various products were produced, such as umbrellas, tobacconists, cigarette holders, pipes, cases, canes, whips, brushes, brushes, plumes, physics and chemistry instruments, hat frames, collars, sleeves, skirts. and corsets. Whale meat is not very tasty. Therefore, it was given to slaves. Finally, the tendons were used to make ropes.

Whaling was, for a long time, the main activity of the Portuguese crown on the coast of Santa Catarina. This lasted until the mid-1920s, when the British installed frames on the Falkland Islands (Argentina). They hunted the whales before they reached the Brazilian coast, in addition, the whales were becoming increasingly scarce. These factors led to the total decline of the whaling economy in Florianópolis.

On November 13, 1827, it was determined that the frames be auctioned. They ended up being leased by the company of Veríssimo Mendes Viana. With no whales and with other fuels being developed, such as coal and oil, whaling ended and the frames were torn down. The hunting ban in Brazil, however, was only effectively banned in 1987.

Meeting of the Sangradouro River with the sea

Due to the community that grew due to the economy, Armação became one of the largest housing centers in the south of the island. It developed in terms of services and tourism, attracting surfers and vacationers annually.

In recent years, whales have reappeared on the coast of Santa Catarina, bringing yet another attraction to the beach and preserving observation tourism.
