Carvoeira is a small and typical university district, located 6,2 km from the Florianopolis downtown and next to the Reitor João David Ferreira Lima University Campus, the largest campus in Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in the state.

Its main street, Capitão Romualdo de Barros, one of the main accesses to the federal university, reflects the university routine of most residents of the neighborhood, busy with an accelerated daily life of students during the week, quiet and with empty streets on weekends. and holidays.

A completely residential neighborhood, Carvoeira has basic services, such as small markets, bakeries, restaurants and university bars, which are always full during university classes and with little movement during the Ufsc holidays.

History

The main theory about the origin of the name of the neighborhood is that there was a charcoal factory there. However, the exact period in which she was active is not known. Some say that the coal produced supplied the vessels that docked at Saco dos Limões; others argue that the charcoal plant was only installed to supply the dredger that worked on the Bahia Sul landfill.

For a long time, Carvoeira belonged to Saco dos Limões, which makes the two neighborhoods share a good part of their histories. The occupation of the region began with the arrival of migrants from other communities, mostly of Azorean origin. Later, freed slaves also chose the area as their new place of residence.

Until the mid-twentieth century, Carvoeira was taken over by large farms and there was no running water or paving in the streets. The dynamics of the neighborhood only changed with the arrival of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), which integrated the region into the urban fabric of the city center and attracted a number of new residents, mainly students from abroad.

On January 18, 2013, Mayor César Souza Júnior enacted Complementary Law No. 456, which officially recognizes Carvoeira as a neighborhood. The act finally aligned the public authorities' perception with the uses and customs of the city's residents, who had already separated Carvoeira from Saco dos Limões a few decades ago.
