Such a set of bodies and companies can make anyone imagine the neighborhood as a gray, completely urbanized place. However, most of it is made up of Itacorubi mangrove, considered the largest mangrove located in urban areas in the world. In addition to the natural beauties, this important ecosystem is called the nursery of the sea, as it is where marine species seek shelter for breeding.

History

The origin of the term “Itacorubi” is controversial. Some believe that Itacorubi is the Portuguese version of "itakuru-í", the name of a bird that inhabited the region and an indigenous group that lived there. Others argue that it came from “ita-kurubi”, which means “boulder” and would refer to the source of the river that cuts through the region, full of stones and rocks. There are also those who associate “itacorubi” with “itacolomy”, whose meaning, in Tupi, is “stone boy”.

In the mid-XNUMXth century, the arrival of Azorean and Madeiran immigrants significantly altered the way in which Santa Catarina Island was occupied. The new inhabitants settled mainly by the sea, but some moved towards the interior of the territory and gave rise to small villages that would later become some of the neighborhoods of Florianópolis. One of these villages, naturally, was Itacorubi.

Over the next two centuries, the region assumed predominantly rural characteristics: the large farms produced a huge variety of fruits and vegetables, there were pastures for dairy cattle, and fishing complemented the families' diet. In Morro do Quilombo, coffee plantations and the production of mineral coal emerged.

This bucolic landscape influenced the way of life of the residents of Itacorubi. Horse races, cockfights, hunting and ox party. Football was also a recurring practice, with the main teams in the region being Paula Ramos Jr., Palmeiras and Ferroviária. The headquarters of Paula Ramos and Ferroviária, by the way, were used to hold the biggest balls in the region.

However, this dynamic began to change in the 1920s, when the Municipal Cemetery was transferred from the central region - where the insular headwaters of the Hercílio Luz Bridge - to the then neighborhood of Três Pontes. The inauguration took place in 1925 and more than 30 graves belonging to ordinary citizens and members of religious brotherhoods, brotherhoods and the cemetery of the German community were transferred to it.

Some time later, in the 1960s, Glauco Olinger, then agricultural advisor to the Government's Plan of Goals, idealized the concentration of all public bodies linked to the management of agriculture in Santa Catarina in one place. Itacorubi ended up being chosen for this project because it is an area very close to the center of Florianópolis and still has free public areas.

Later, other public agencies moved to the neighborhood, causing buildings, subdivisions and new houses to be built to accommodate the servers of these offices. Eventually, SC-404 was paved, making access to the east of the island. All these developments gave rise to a new Itacorubi, less rural and more modern.
