History

The name of Traditional Jurerê refers to the past. “Jurerê” supposedly comes from “Y-Jurerê Mirim”, which in Tupi-Guarani would mean “small mouth of water”. This “little mouth” is the little piece of sea that separates the Island and the Continent, today connected by bridges. The “Traditional” comes from the fact that this is the portion of Jurerê that preserves the region's ancient cultural characteristics.

However, this name is recent and is related to the urban development of Jurerê. Some of the neighborhood's oldest residents still refer to it as “Caldeirão”, a name that apparently has no specific motivation. The manezinhos from other locations used to call it just Praia do Forte, due to the presence of the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa.

The oldest records about the history of the region exist precisely because of the defensive system of Santa Catarina Island. It was through the area that today corresponds to Jurerê that the road that connected the fortification to the village of Canasvieiras passed. In a plan dating from the end of the XNUMXth century, the beach that bathes the neighborhood appeared with the name of São Francisco de Paula.

The few families that came to live in Jurerê had the sea as their main source of income, but they also practiced agriculture. There was a large amount of land for common use, where residents could raise a few heads of cattle, establish mills or collect firewood for domestic use and wood for building houses and small boats.

In cultural terms, games with the ox predominated: there was the Boi de Pano, the Boi party and the Papaya Ox. There was also the dance of Tape Stick and celebrations such as the Terno de Reis and the Feast of the Holy Spirit. At the end of the fishing and harvest seasons, dances were held, and some residents also held dances in their homes.

The construction of the Hercílio Luz Bridge, at the beginning of the XNUMXth century, was a landmark for the development of the city. However, in order for the work to get off the ground, it was necessary to expropriate the land around the insular head. As a form of compensation, the government offered their owner, Antônio Amaro, a good part of the communal lands used by the residents of Jurerê.

Amaro accepted the proposal, but never received the definitive deed to his new properties. Still, he demarcated and fenced the land, built flour mills and allowed the residents to continue to develop their subsistence activities in the area. Over time, these people began to refer to the land as “Campos de Antônio Amaro”.

With the death of the owner, his widow had to go to court to prove ownership of the land. For that, she hired the lawyer Osvaldo Bulcão Viana. The impasse only ended in 1935, when Aderbal Ramos da Silva, a famous local politician, managed to buy the properties. At that time, Aderbal Ramos - who would become governor of Santa Catarina - was director of the newly created Imobiliária Jurerê.

The real estate company's main development was a subdivision with the same name, Jurerê. However, the influence of the politician was such that even the neighboring areas underwent transformations: in the space that today corresponds to Jurerê Tradicional, the Praia do Forte condominium was built. It was also there that many of the former inhabitants of Campos de Antônio Amaro moved during the process of creating the Jurerê subdivision.

In 1978, the Habitasul Group acquired the land from Jurerê real estate. Two years later, the company delivered its first construction, the Jurerê Praia Hotel, which would come to represent the physical boundary between Jurerê Tradicional and Jurerê Internacional. With the delivery of the Jurerê Internacional subdivision, this portion of the resort underwent an accelerated development and the neighboring region, Jurerê Tradicional, felt its reflexes.
