Officially, Ponta das Canas is part of the District of Cachoeira do Bom Jesus and its area ranges from Ponta das Canas beach to Lagoinha Beach.

The neighborhood follows the edge of the beach, and commerce is concentrated along Avenida Luiz Boiteux Piazza, the main access road. There are few establishments, all aimed at meeting the needs of local residents, such as grocery stores, bakeries, pharmacies, etc.

In the last decade, the neighborhood has undergone intense growth, leaving behind the rural aspect and taking on urban contours, which has encouraged new residents to settle in the region. Currently, its fixed population already exceeds 3.168 inhabitants. However, during the holiday and summer season this number multiplies. Even with the continuous growth of the city, Ponta das Canas has maintained its main characteristics: the peace, the residential air and the great presence of green and nature.

History

Second Virgílio Várzea, one of the most important writers born in Florianópolis, the Ponta das Canas neighborhood has this name because it was considered an appropriate place for sugarcane cultivation. Also according to him, there was already a real abundance of sugarcane in the region even before the arrival of the first reconnaissance expeditions to the territory of Santa Catarina Island.

The occupation of Ponta das Canas probably took place in the mid-XNUMXth century, with the arrival of Azorean and Madeiran couples who were designated by the Portuguese crown to occupy the island. One of the first communities founded by these immigrants was Canasvieiras and, from what Várzea suggests in some of his writings, Ponta das Canas was part of Canasvieiras at least until the beginning of the XNUMXth century.

The residents of Ponta das Canas had a close relationship with both the land and the sea, since the livelihood of the families depended on agriculture, cattle raising and also the fishery handmade. Religious festivals were the main events of the community, since it was on these occasions that people could meet, exercise their sociability and affirm ties of friendship and kinship.

During the first half of the XNUMXth century, this dynamic underwent some transformations. Attracted by the prospect of a better quality of life, many of the fishermen from Ponta das Canas migrated to other states, especially to Rio Grande do Sul. Even the spatial configuration of the neighborhood underwent changes: most of the houses were concentrated around the church, but this changed over time.

On the initiative of Paulo Fontes, at the time mayor of Florianópolis, a dirt road that would connect Ponta das Canas to downtown Florianópolis was built during the 1950s. In the 1970s, this road was paved with asphalt and was named SC-401 highway, becoming, from then on, the main route towards the resorts in the north of Santa Catarina Island.

This ease of access has made beaches like Canasvieiras, English and Ponta das Canas were discovered by tourists. And in Ponta das Canas, specifically, tourism went further and reoriented the community's economic and social relations. Residents adapted to the new activity and began to build houses for seasonal rentals, bars and restaurants. Some even use their boats and speedboats for sea tours, taking tourists to discover the beauties of islands such as anhatomirim, French and Arvoredo.
