O Santa Monica is an upper-middle class neighborhood in Florianópolis, located in Central region of Santa Catarina Island, between the neighborhoods Itacorubi, Big Stream e Trinity, . Fully urbanized, its streets are wide, tree-lined and paved.
As it was built on an area of mangroves, Santa Monica is a flat neighborhood, which makes it easier for residents to move around, whether on walks in the neighborhood or on bike rides.
Santa Monica has three leisure areas open to the public. Maria Tereza Kock square has a large green area, wooden toys for children, an outdoor gym, a soccer field and a Military Police post. João Di Bernardi and Breno Pinheiro Valadares squares are characterized only as green areas.
Avenida Madre Benvenuta is the main street that cuts through the neighborhood and also the commercial artery of the region, with a wide variety of commercial stores and services of all kinds, such as medical and dental clinics, car dealerships, gas stations and supermarkets, in addition to three excellent shopping centers. The main one is the Shopping Iguatemi, which opened in 2007 and has more than 160 stores, a food court and seven movie theaters.
Santa Monica also has good entertainment options and gastronomy, such as bars, cafes, restaurants and lounge-type nightclubs. Most options are distributed along Avenida Madre Benvenuta, in the portion closest to Shopping Iguatemi.
In the neighborhood is also located the main campus of Santa Catarina State University (UDESC), divided into three centers: esag, with courses in Business Administration, Public Administration and Economic Sciences; Ceart, with courses in Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Music and Fashion; and faed, which offers courses in Librarianship, Geography, History and Pedagogy.
History
The name of the Santa Monica neighborhood is a tribute to Monica of Hippo, saint of the Catholic Church and mother of Saint Augustine. According to Catholic tradition, it was through a dream of hers that Augustine discovered his religious vocation. Eventually, Monica became a saint, but not because she performed any miracles or because she was a martyr, but because she was largely responsible for her son's conversion.

For a long time, the area that today corresponds to Santa Monica belonged to the Santíssima Trindade de Trás do Morro, a village founded by Azorean and Madeiran immigrants in the XNUMXth century. In the XNUMXth century, the Trinity it was already so relevant to the city that it was elevated to the category of parish and began to take care of ecclesiastical care in the interior of Nossa Senhora do Desterro.
At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the priest Francisco Topp acquired a set of land in the region of Trindade for the sisters of Divina Providência, who had just arrived from Germany to work on humanitarian missions throughout various parts of the state of Santa Catarina. These lands represented a significant part of what would become the Santa Monica neighborhood.
From the 1960s onwards, Florianópolis underwent a marked process of modernization. Major works came to fruition in this period, such as connecting the city to the BR-101, the construction of the Colombo Salles bridge and the expansion of the North Seaside Avenue. It was also around this time that several public bodies were installed in the city, including the Federal University of Santa Catarina and Eletrosul.
Both the university and the electricity distribution company were instrumental in the accelerated occupation of the area around downtown Florianópolis. Both brought with them a large contingent of workers and students from other states, who settled in neighborhoods such as Trindade, Pantanal, Big Stream e Itacorubi. Later, other neighborhoods were created from them, as is the case of Santa Monica.
