National jury approves the nomination of 29 beaches and 11 Brazilian marinas for the evaluation of the Blue Flag certificate

The number of locations awarded with the Blue Flag in the 2022/2023 season should increase considerably, with emphasis on Santa Catarina

On the morning of this Wednesday (01/06/2022), the National Jury Meeting of the Blue Flag Brazil Program. The meeting aimed to assess compliance with the criteria established by the program for the management of beaches and marinas. After evaluation, 40 locations were pre-approved, 29 of which are beaches and 11 marinas, which will be recommended for evaluation by the international jury. Thus, Brazil should increase the number of locations certified with the Blue Flag. Last season, 22 beaches and 6 marinas received the ecological seal.

For the 2022/2023 season, the national jury received documentation from 42 candidates, with 28 renewals and 14 new candidates. All new applicants and 26 more renewals were pre-approved. Those classified by the national jury will have their application forwarded to the international Blue Flag jury, which meets in September to choose the winners. The result will be announced in October and the flag handing ceremony will take place in November, at the beginning of the summer season in the southern hemisphere.

“The significant increase each year in the number of locations with the Blue Flag seal is a sustainability award for the country”, says Leandro 'Mané' Ferrari, president of the Brazilian Nautical Association (ACATMAR). According to him, the certifications are the result of a union of organized civil society, the nautical sector and the government.

Based in Santa Catarina, the entity captains the GT Náutico Santa Catarina, with excellent results. "As a member of the national jury for the Blue Flag, I follow the candidates' maturation year after year and recognize the commitment of those who fight for it. These are both environmental and financial advantages, strengthening quality tourism to the awarded locations".

As president of Santur - Santa Catarina Tourism Development Agency, Ferrari created a program to strengthen the program, with diagnoses for about forty potential points in the state.

This year, the national jury for the Blue Flag Program was composed of representatives of the Ministry of Tourism (MTur), the Ambientes em Rede Institute (IAR), ACATMAR, the Brazilian Coastal Management Agency, the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation, the Brazilian Society Rescue Service (SOBRASA), the National Association of Municipal Environmental Agencies (ANAMMA) and the Brazilian Association of State Environmental Entities (ABEMA). Annually, the entities meet to define the beaches, marinas and tourism vessels that qualify for the award and that will be submitted to the international jury.

The main objective of the Blue Flag Program is to make society, entrepreneurs in the nautical segment and public managers aware of the need to protect marine and coastal environments, encouraging actions focused on management, quality, protection and environmental education.
